Factory Tint vs Window Film — What’s the Difference?

One of the most common questions we get at Shade9 Window Tinting is: “Can you match my front windows to the factory tint on the back—but still keep it legal?”

It’s a great question, and understanding the difference between factory tint and aftermarket window film is key to making the right choice for your vehicle.

✅ Factory Tint = Dyed Glass

What many people refer to as “factory tint” is actually privacy glass—dyed during the manufacturing process and built right into the glass itself.

This type of tint is commonly found on the rear windows of trucks, SUVs, and some crossovers, and typically ranges between 15% and 22% VLT (Visible Light Transmission). That means it only allows 15–22% of visible light through the glass, creating a darker appearance and added privacy.

👉 But here’s the catch: factory tint offers no real heat rejection, UV protection, or glare reduction. It’s purely cosmetic and privacy-based.

✅ Window Film = Aftermarket Tint

Unlike factory tint, aftermarket tint is a film applied to the inside of the window—usually on the front driver and passenger windows (which are almost always untinted from the factory).

High-quality window films, like those we install at Shade9, can do so much more than darken glass. Depending on the type of film you choose—such as ceramic or infrared-rejecting film—you can benefit from:

  • 🌡️ Heat rejection for a cooler interior

  • ☀️ 99% UV protection to help prevent skin damage and fading interiors

  • 👁️ Glare reduction for safer driving

  • 🔒 Shatter resistance for added safety

Most states, including West Virginia, have legal limits for front window tint—typically around 35% VLT. That means your film must allow at least 35% of visible light through.

🚫 Trying to Match the Factory Tint on the Front?

We totally get it—many drivers want a seamless, uniform look. But trying to match the rear factory tint on the front windows can often result in a film that’s darker than what’s legal for front windows.

Unless you have a medical exemption, applying a 20% or darker film up front could put you at risk for a ticket or inspection failure.

⚠️ Bottom Line: Know the Difference Before You Tint

Understanding the difference between factory tint and aftermarket window film can save you time, money, and potential legal headaches.

If you already have factory tint in the back, we can apply a matching legal film up front that blends the look and adds real protection—heat rejection, UV blocking, and more.
